Color Theory: Triad Color Combination + Bonus Cards

Hello crafty friends! Today, I’m diving into one of my favorite ways to bring harmony and visual interest to a card—using the color wheel to choose a triad color scheme. I’ll be working with the beautiful Stencil Art: Ditsy Flowers Wallpaper from Altenew and showing how to build a colorful, layered background with perfectly balanced hues.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed choosing colors that work well together, this post (and the video tutorial linked below!) is for you. I’ll walk through how to pick colors using the triad rule and how to get crisp, clean results with layering stencils—plus a bonus tip on stretching your background into two unique card designs. Let’s get inky!

I also have some bonus cards to share that I have had over on the Altenew blog and have been meaning to share here on my blog so you have lots of inspiration today!

VIDEO

You can check out the video down below on the Triad Color Combination.

I walk through everything in the video so down below I will list the main supplies used.

SUPPLIES

By die cutting a shape from my panel, I was able to get two cards from this gorgeous background.

Here is the bonus content I have for you. This first one is using a monochromatic color scheme.

I combined a few products to create this soft, delicate design.

You will find a full visual supply list at the end of this post.

And one more bonus card featuring the Build A Garden Through The Tulips.

I created the flowers with the Sun Kissed Ink Collections and Forest Trail Ink Collection.

I die cut a window from the front of my card using the Oval Serenity Die and then ran it through with the embossing folder from the Arched Foliage bundle.

Hello Mindy! Your triadic color card is so lovely! When I was here yesterday, there were 3 other color combos of the same design and they were lovely too. I was also wondering where they went? I have my color wheel in hand and wanted to study what the combinations were. Your “new” bonus cards are lovely too. I am trying to remember if they were there yesterday or not. I might have been gobsmacked with your other examples of the stencil with the various color combos!

  2. Clever concept and outstanding results, stunningly beautiful xx
