Today I’m going to be brave and try something new… .well… new to me. I’ve been watching a lot of videos from Kelly Latevola. She is an amazing artist and even though she may favor copics as her go-to choice of coloring, she can really color with anything. I’ve really become drawn to her creations where she colors with Distress Inks.
In one of her videos, she gives her viewers an “assignment”. She is using the sentiment Be Brave from a new release stamp set from Simon Says Stamp/CZ Design. She encourages her viewers to be brave in some part of their life. I’m taking that challenge to my creative desk. I’m going to be brave and attempt this technique.
I’m starting off with this beautiful Modern Peonies set from Wplus9. I first stamp out my images onto some masking paper so I can attempt a one layer card – also another challenge for me. Then, I will stamp my images onto Canson watercolor paper using Simon Says Stamp black ink, applying my masks where needed.
Next, I’m going to smoosh down my distress oxides onto a craft mat. I’m using Picked Raspberry, Spiced Marmalade, Cracked Pistachio, Mermaid Lagoon and Wilted Violet. I’m going to wet my brush, swirl it in the ink I have on my craft sheet and start applying it to my paper. I’ll continue this down over my images, cleaning my brush in between each color. I also go over it twice to try to brighten the colors up as they fade back a little when they dry.
Then, I splatter my card with the colors to add a little more interest. Next, I’m going to take a smaller brush to add more color to my flowers (please don’t ask which size as I have no clue lol). The brushes I use in my video are just random brushes I picked up somewhere. I didn’t remember I had these nice black until after the video was done. Oops!
I try to add color to the flowers like I would if I were using my copic markers – there is just less control. I’m finding things out about myself through this – I’m a control freak.
For my sentiment, I’m using the fabulous Emphatic stamp set from CZ Design and stamp this onto my card with the Misti tool. Using the ruler from the Misti Corners, I draw in a line to separate the two sentiments.
Challenge complete. I colored with Distress Oxides and it was a one layer card. Are there things I would have done differently? Probably but for the overall outcome I am happy. We all start somewhere it’s just a matter of picking up the marker/brush or pen.
