Hello friends! First, I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who joined me LIVE Saturday night for my pre-birthday party bash—and for all of the wonderful birthday wishes! You are such an amazing community, and I’m so grateful you chose to spend part of your weekend celebrating and crafting with me.
For my LIVE, I pulled out the beautiful Hydrangea Stem 3D Embossing Folder and coordinating stencil from Gina K. Designs and revisited a watercolor technique that I’ve shared before. It’s one of those techniques that I come back to again and again because I absolutely love the results!
One of the things I love about this technique is how many different directions you can take it. During the LIVE, I share lots of ideas for creating that loose, watercolor look in the background and ways you can experiment with your colors and application.

The watercolor background can certainly stand on its own with a 3D embossing folder. The texture from the embossed design combined with the soft, organic movement of the watercolor creates a gorgeous card background all by itself.
But when you have a coordinating stencil, you can take the design up a whole new notch!
After creating the watercolor background and embossing the panel with the Hydrangea Stem 3D Embossing Folder, I used the coordinating stencil to add color to the floral image. This allows the hydrangea to really stand out against that loose watercolor background while still letting all of the beautiful embossed texture shine through.

It’s such a fun combination of techniques—watercolor, ink blending, stenciling, and 3D embossing—all working together to create a card with tons of interest.
Be sure to watch the replay to see the entire process and hear more of my tips and ideas for experimenting with watercolor backgrounds.

I’ve updated the YouTube description with all of the supplies used during the LIVE, and you’ll also find a visual supply list linked at the end of this post for easy reference.

Thank you again for joining me, for celebrating my birthday with me, and for always making our crafty community such a wonderful place to be. I hope this inspires you to pull out your embossing folders and try adding a little watercolor to your next project!
Thanks so much for watching, and I’ll see you next time!

Loved your card and this technique. I just finished watching on replay. Happy Birthday!!
Mindy, your cards and pre cards are absolutely stunning. Hydrangeas are my favourite flower and you have made them look so real. Your flowers are the perfect colours, all of them and your backgrounds, beautiful.
