Masking Stencils – Taylored Expressions

Welcome everyone! I have something new and amazing to share with you today from Taylored Expressions designed by Laurie Willison. Introducing the new Masking Stencils! These are available only at Taylored Expressions and are sure to be a staple in your craft stash.

CARD DETAILS

The origin of these stencils came from Laurie who is a master at clean and simple. She would mask off the sides of her card, ink blend an area and when she would go to remove her mask the unthinkable would happen. Her paper would rip! How many times has that happened to you? These Masking Stencils fix all of that for you.

My video goes into all the fun details but the low-down on them is they are a 6″x 6″ stencil with the center cut out. There are 4 different shapes: Circles, Rectangles, Ovals and Squares. The stencils have an etched line on them so you can line them up over a piece of card stock measuring 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ and it will mask off the edges for you.

When you are attaching the card base to your stencil, you will need to put some type of tape on the side of your card stock – sticky side facing up. Then align the etched edges on the stencil with you card base and adhere the Masking Stencil to the exposed tape. This allows the stencil to be attached but won’t damage the front of your card since we did not put any tape on the front.

After you ink blend and remove the stencil, you have these perfectly crisp lines and no tearing! My first example shown here is using the Circle Masking Stencil. I created an ombre look with Cookie Monster and Blue Raspberry ink. Then, I actually layered the Nordic Stencil on top of the Masking Stencil, and ink blended it with Blue Raspberry again for a tone on tone look.

I kept most of my cards pretty clean and simple to keep the focus on the Masking Stencils. I finished off this card by simply adding a sentiment from the Mini Strips Holiday stamp set heat embossed in White onto Lollipop card stock. I also added a Little Bits Reindeer die cut from Oreo card stock and attached with Liquid Glue.

This next card is featuring the Rectangle Masking Stencil. A technique I always wanted to try was ink blending onto Black card stock with Distress Oxides. After attaching my Rectangle Stencil, I ink blended on Picked Raspberry, Wilted Violet and Peacock Feathers Distress Oxide Ink. I found the lighter the color of ink, the better it showed up.

Next, I added the Nordic Snowflake Stencil on top again, but this time added Moonstone Glimmer Paste with a palette knife. Be sure to check out the video HERE on what the card looked like with just the Distress Oxide ink blended on.

Once dry, I added another Mini Strips Holiday sentiment heat embossed onto Lollipop card stock with White Embossing Powder.

This is an amazing technique that was so fun to try out!

This next card is also featuring the Rectangle Masking Stencil. As you can see, there are two different sizes. You also get the cut outs so if you’d rather add ink blending to the edges and keep the center free of ink, you can do that too!

There are 4 four shapes of Masking Stencils available and each shape has two stencils. You can also buy them all in one set. I favor the Rectangles and Circles but the Squares and Ovals are just as fun!

Here I created a small winter scene in the center of my card. After attaching my Rectangle Stencil, I ink blended Sprinkles, Jelly Donut and Blue Corn ink with a blending brush. I die cut the Santa using On Dasher, On Dancer die out of Oreo card stock. To fit my scene, I trimmed off some of the deer so I was left with one reindeer and the sleigh. Then adhered with liquid glue.

Check out those perfect edges!

One more card to share may seem super simple but it’s a trick I stumbled upon.

How many times have you purchased a large stencil like the Winter’s Beauty from Taylored Expressions, that would look amazing centered on a card front. Now how many times do you actually get it perfectly centered?

I struggled with centering and always ended up trimming the panel down. Well I have a trick for that now!

Lay your Masking Stencil on your work surface. I’m using the Rectangle one for this card shown below. Attach some purple tape to the edges of the inside frame, sticky side up.

Now lay your 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ card stock on top of that, lining up your card stock with those etched lines. Push down a little and your card stock is now held in place with the purple tape from behind. In a sense, we are using these stencils backwards.

Now you can add your Winter’s Beauty stencil on top. Since the Masking Stencil is 6″ 6″ and almost all of the other stencils are 6″ x 6″ all you have to do is match up the edges and hold the top stencil down to your work surface with purple tape. Poof! You will now have a perfectly centered snow flake on your card front.
